  Abstract
Worldwide, there is a growing interest in hemp fibre for textile applications. It is in the economic and social interest of the EU to become self-supportive in that area. In the EU, there is no large scale production of hemp yarns and fabrics, because of poor fibre quality and poor fibre homogeneity. Those aspects and the uncertainty of a constant supply of hemp fibre limit the interest of EU industries.
The HEMP SYS project aims to solve these problems by providing decision support to primary producers, integrated quality control systems for raw and processed products, and dissemination of information to support the entire chain of the hemp fibre industry. Main project result are: innovative hemp fibre production systems with support tools for farmers, optimal processing methods, a prototype for integrated quality control, disseminated knowledge and high-value hemp textiles end products.

  Objectives
The main objective of this project is to promote the development of a competitive, innovative and sustainable hemp fibre textile industry in the EU by:
a) Developing an improved, ecologically sustainable production chain for high quality hemp fibre textiles coupled to an integrated quality system for stems, raw and processed fibres, yarns and fabrics based on eco-labelling criteria.
b) Providing a comprehensive economic assessment of EU and international fibre hemp markets, consumer requirements and EU-production costs and returns.
c) Disseminating as much as possible the knowledge generated using the latest information technologies.

  Brief description of the work
This project has been designed to investigate, develop and implement improvements and quality standards throughout the entire hemp fibre-textile production chain. In order to minimise environmental impact and to enhance the added value to hemp fibre production, the whole production chain has been designed following criteria that will enable end-products to be Eco-label certified. The participation of university researchers, farmers’ organisations, processors, spinning and textile industries and textile end-product producers is necessary, and provides evidence that private sector entrepreneurs are convinced that this industry has good prospects in Europe.
The activities needed to reach these objectives will be executed in six workpackages (WP), each having their own specific goals. These six workpackages include the production and processing of raw material, yarns and fabrics, design and application, integrating quality aspects of the production chain, and disseminating knowledge to support the hemp fibre industry.
