All activities of the HempSys Project are grouped in six workpackages organized in a simple, logical and clear-cut way. Together the six workpackages represent a matrix structure, as can be seen in the modified PERT diagram. In this structure, results of R&D activities in the four thematic workpackages (WP1, WP2, WP3 and WP4) will be integrated by activities carried out in workpackages WP5 and WP6. In the modified PERT diagram integrative tasks are indicated in the dashed boxes presented as intersections between workpackages. Activities in both the thematic workpackages and the integrative workpackages will lead to deliverables that are highly relevant to the hemp fibre production chain. Distinct from the deliverables produced in the thematic workpackages, the deliverables of the integrative workpackages are multi-disciplinary and multi-functional. The main deliverables are:
WP1) a prototype Decision Support Tool for primary producers to facilitate the production, on-farm or near-farm, of high quality hemp fibre with minimum input use and a basic agronomic technology that will permit eco-labelling;
WP2) to provide industry with decorticated and de-gummed fibre in ribbons;
WP3) collections of specified high quality hemp-based yarns and fabrics for application in high-value end-products;
WP4) hemp-based apparel and rugs, made from the fabrics produced in WP2, that meet consumers’ demands;
WP5) an Integrated Quality System for hemp stems, raw and processed hemp fibre and hemp-based yarns and fabrics including proposals to implement a grading and classification system and Eco-labelling for these materials;
WP6) a comprehensive economic assessment of EU and international fibre hemp markets, consumer requirements and EU-production costs and returns disseminated together with the other non-protected project deliverables.
